Write Around Portland

Volunteer
1) Complete a Volunteer Application (online)

2) Attend a Group Orientation: our Program Coordinator will contact you to schedule your orientation date.

3) Start Volunteering!
• Community readings volunteers help with set up, clean up, registration, hospitality, giving directions, photography, snacks, book sales

• Evening shifts at our office, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. We will notify volunteers of these shifts via email. Volunteers may help with: mailings, book production, or prepare for events

• Mailing parties: Work on mailing in small teams: fold, write, stuff, seal and stamp news and mailings

• Office shift volunteers: 2 hour shifts during office hours helping staff with various tasks

Hands On Greater Portland

Everyone can do something for the community. At Hands On Greater Portland, we develop this potential in volunteers. We connect them with opportunities to feed the hungry, teach our children, house the homeless, restore our environment and meet other important community needs. Many of the volunteering projects can be done in a day or over a longer period of time.

Blanchet House

Food Service Volunteer Opportunities
We serve 3 meals per day Monday through Saturday (Closed Sunday).
Breakfast service is from 6:00 am to 7:30 am
Lunch service is from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm
Dinner service is from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm
The job assignments we have available to our volunteers are as follows:
-Cook’s Helper (plating the food)
-Food Server (bringing the food out to the guests)
-Busser (clearing the tables of dirty plates and cups)
-Beverages (keeping the coffee, water and/or juice filled)

Clothing Volunteer Opportunies
-Blanchet house also needs volunteers to help sort clothing donations

Children 14 years and older welcome to volunteer.

Neighborhood House

-Regular volunteer opportunities
-Temporary opportuniites to help with events and programs such as the Food Box program, holiday gift drive and Feed the Hungry Campaign.

Free Geek

Free Geek is a Portland-based nonprofit offering free computers, technology and education powered by reuse & recycling.
Free Geek also offers a wide range of classes free to our volunteers and the general public, unless otherwise specified. Classes range from basic introductions to computers, to starting your first website and learning how to program. https://www.freegeek.org/community-programs/education
They are constantly adding new classes and looking for volunteer instructors. There is volunteerism available in Spanish and English.

Portland Parks & Recreation

Portland Parks & Recreation offers a variety of fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities at sites across the city! Annually, Portlanders volunteer over 450,000 hours with us to help make our parks great! Volunteer coaches, teacher aides, and mentors are always needed in our youth programs – and the parks, gardens, and natural areas welcome extra hands.
Ongoing and one-day projects are available and no experience is necessary!
Required: Name, states where you have lived for several years and date of birth. Application information does not require a social security number.
We serve as employers and as volunteer recruiters.

Rosewood Initiative

“Rosewood is a neighborhood space where you can help the community as you improve yourself. Neighbors come here to interact with one another, work on projects and feel safe. Rosewood builds capacity in the neighborhood by helping people learn useful skills and by connecting friends, partners and resources.”

Opportunities:
-Engage with emerging community leaders at the Rosewood center and in the community
-Build community pride and cohesion through planning and participating in meetings, activities and events
-Connect with neighbors, businesses and partner organizations to increase our collective impact
and much more: -event set-up, management, clean-up, projects and more. There is always a need for bilingual volunteers.

Birch Community Services

Food Sorting, Preparing for classes. Birch can use individual volunteers on M/W/F from 9 am to 5 pm without prior scheduling. Please volunteer for at least two hours so that we can make the most out of your travel and time commitments. Scheduling is required at all other times by contacting the office at 503.251.5431. Central City Concern

Portland homeless charity & volunteering opportunities.
-Help front desk staff, welcome guests and patients
-Community room volunteer, serve meals, play games, lead activities
